Travel Awards

"NEWCOMER'S" TRAVEL AWARDS ($4,000.00 CDN)

In an effort to encourage new attendees at the North American Moose Conference and Workshop who will report on recent studies of moose ecology and who will submit a manuscript for possible publication in the journal Alces, the North American Moose Group will provide up to $4,000.00 CDN to the local organizing committee to cover the costs associated with attendance at the annual meeting for young researchers. It is expected that employers or sponsors of the applicants will also assist with travel costs.

Eligibility: Anyone who has not attended more than one or two previous North American Moose Conferences and who wishes to prepare a manuscript and present a paper at the annual meeting. This could include government or private agency biologists/managers, faculty and graduate students at a university, or anyone newly established and anxious to report results of original research relating to the biology and management of moose. Priority will be given to individuals who have never attended a Moose Conference or has attended only once.

Criteria: Decisions regarding awards will be based on the relative merits of draft manuscripts submitted by applicants prior to the Conference. Those wishing to be considered must submit a manuscript, that is ready for review and possible publication in Alces, to the Chair of the local Organizing Committee. Manuscripts will be judged on the basis of data originality, ideas, interpretation, accuracy, conciseness, clarity, appropriate subject matter, and contribution to the existing literature. Instructions for manuscript preparation can be found inside the front cover of a recent copy of Alces and in Rodgers et al. (1998) "Manuscript guidelines for contributors to Alces".

Judging: Manuscripts will be judged according to the above criteria by members of the local Organizing Committee of each Annual Meeting, in consultation with the Editors of Alces.

Amount: Payment will be made for travel and related expenses, documented by receipts, shortly after the Conference.

Submission Deadline: Applicants should indicate their interest in being considered for the "Newcomers Travel Award" competition in a brief covering letter describing past Conference attendance and any expected support from other sources. This letter and a completed manuscript must be submitted to the Chair of the local Organizing Committee of the North American Moose Conference and Workshop at the address advertised for the up-coming meeting of that year. Check Conference announcement information carefully for the deadline date set by the local Organizing Committee.
